This did not make the cut of a recent essay but here it is as its own little saying:
If the appetizers were as bad at Los Angeles restaurants as often as the art is regularly terrible at the galleries and museums, we would have all died of food poisoning. Since bad art does no damage to our eyes, perhaps that is why we slog on. Like a losing season for your favorite sports team, there are always a few sweet victories to relish.
