Artist Cassandra Simon and her painting at DIYGallery, Echo Park, 01/19/08
We went to a lot of little art spaces tonight, out of the way places that are shots in the dark, experiments, treaties between like-minded ambiguarians – social spaces with the residue of effort on the walls.
These are the galleries that produce the next great generation, albeit along with much detritus. We went to DIYGallery for a solo show of masterful paintings/wall installs by Cassandra Simon. Next door was Cave Space (excellent show entitled “DOOM AND GLITTER” about nostalgia for ’80s Heavy Metal), and then we drove over to Eagle Rock for a Marx Brothers tribute art show by Matt McFarlane.
It was a good night for L.A. Art, fresh.
